How to Make a Chocolate Box Inspired Cookie Set

Valentine’s day is one of my favorite holidays. Most people treat it as a couples only holiday, but those people forget the joy of candy in a classroom in elementary school. Back in those days you’re handing out a treat to everyone in your class.

Some of my favorite Valentine memories are things like some homeschooled friends experiencing Valentine’s day for the first time, handing out bagged pieces of raw meat with a card that says “Have a piece of my heart.” Or my dad getting me a Chet Baker CD – My Funny Valentine – that I still enjoy to this day.

For the past 10 years, instead of a Christmas card, I’ve sent out a Valentine’s Day card to the people in my life I love.

When you make this set, I hope you can share it with some people in your life that you love. Whether that be making it with friends, sharing it at a Galentine’s event, surprising your kids, or a sweet treat with your partner.

In the words of Forrest Gump (well, his mom, right?), “Life is like a box of chocolates,” but with these cookies, you’ll know exactly what you’re gonna get – pure deliciousness!

Supplies

  • Brown Sugar Cookie Base
  • Royal Icing
  • Cocoa powder
  • Red gel or powder food coloring
  • Toothpick or scribe
  • 5 (or more) tipless piping bags (and scissors to cut them)
  • Paper towel

Truffle Cookie Designs

This set makes 3 main cookie designs, but 6 cookies when you change out the colors.

Each cookie can be made in milk chocolate and dark chocolate, doubling the number of cookies this set can make.

Obviously, you have the option to make as many or as few of these designs as you would like, but if you want a full box of chocolates, I recommend them all!

This is a very simple set. But don’t mistake simple for easy. Any set that includes straight lines will never be “easy”. Doable, but not easy.

Key Takeaways

I don’t make practice sets before I put together a design, so there’s always something I’ll learn and would want to change in the future, here’s those things:

  • Spend more time mixing colors. Using cocoa powder to make the color and flavor I love, but I think if I spent more time mixing, the icing would flow a little better.
  • Not rely exclusively on the cocoa powder to flavor the icing. Okay, white lie, I didn’t do that, I added orange extract. I would highly recommend having a complimentary flavor in the icing alongside the cocoa.
  • When it comes to the lines – go slow. Moving slower allows you to get a straighter line, as well as letting the icing flow out of the bag and not touching it directly to the cookie from the bag.
  • Have a chocolate box ready for presentation!
